About St Helen’s
The town of St Helens was named after a church that was first recorded in 1552. It was created where the Ormskirk to Warrington route met the Prescot to Ashton road. The territory that is presently St Helens was separated into four townships at the time. Eccleston, Windle, Parr, and Sutton were their names. Until 1670, when a man called John Lyon bequeathed money to build a school next door, a school was held in the church. Although the area was primarily agricultural, coal mining began in the 16th century. The town of St Helens thrived because it had easy access to coal and sand for glass production, as well as strong communications. From the late 17th century onwards, St Helens profited from Liverpool’s fast expansion. Liverpool was not just a market in and of itself, but also a convenient port for commodities coming from St Helens. A turnpike road connected St Helens to Prescot and Liverpool in 1746. (You had to pay to utilise this road.) The turnpike road was extended to Ashton in 1753. The Sankey Navigation canal was constructed in 1762. Improved connectivity helped St Helens expand in the 18th century. The canal made transporting coal to Liverpool considerably easier and less expensive. As a result, coal mining in the St Helens region exploded.
