About Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton’s story began in 985, when Wulfruna, a Saxon woman, was granted land at Heanton. She established a minster church in 994. (a church with a monastery attached). The monastery’s hamlet grew larger, and its name was changed to Wulfruna’s Heanton, and then to Wolverhampton.
Wolverhampton received the ability to organise markets and fairs in 1258. Because there were few stores in the Middle Ages, people travelled to markets to buy and sell their goods. Fairs were similar to markets, but they were only conducted once a year and drew consumers and vendors from all over the world. Wolverhampton was a modest market town at the time.
In 994, a monastery was consecrated in Wolverhampton for which Wulfrun granted land at Upper Arley in Worcestershire, Bilston, Willenhall, Wednesfield, Pelsall, Ogley Hay near Brownhills, Hilton near Wall, Hatherton, Kinvaston, Hilton near Wolverhampton, and Featherstone. This became the site for the current St. Peter’s Church. A statue of Lady Wulfrun, sculpted by Sir Charles Wheeler, can be seen on the stairs outside the church.
