How Mike Harris Gutter Clearing Newcastle Upon Tyne Helps the Local Area
Newcastle upon Tyne, or simply ‘Newcastle,’ is one of Britain’s most recognisable cities, known for its industrial background, distinctive brown ale, vibrant nightlife, and distinct regional ‘Geordie’ dialectt
The city, which is situated on the banks of the River Tyne in the North East of England, has seen various alterations from its beginnings as a Roman fort on Hadrian’s Wall in 122AD. Pons Aelius, or Aelian Bridge in Latin, was the name of the settlement, with ‘Aelian’ being Emperor Hadrian’s surname. Pons Aelius was renamed Monkchester and absorbed into the powerful Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria after the Romans left Britain in 410AD.
The city’s current name was given to it during Norman dominance in 1080. The town thrived as a leader in the wool trade during the Middle Ages, with wool being a valuable commodity at the period. The town was favoured by the royals because of its strategic location, obtaining its own mayor in 1216 and becoming a county town with its own sheriff in 1400. Even the demise of the wool trade in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had little impact on Newcastle, because a royal act passed in 1530 mandated that all coal exports from the North East be shipped from Newcastle quayside, even if the coal was not mined there. This allowed Newcastle to thrive as a regional commercial hub, slowing the rise of nearby cities like Sunderland.
