About Hull

Marine painter John Ward (1798–1849) was born, worked and died in Hull and was a leading ship artist of his day. Artist and Royal Academician Professor David Remfry (born 1942) grew up in Hull and studied at the Hull College of Art (now part of Lincoln University) from 1959 to 1964. His tutor, Gerald T Harding, trained at the Royal College of Art, London and was awarded the Abbey Minor Travelling Scholarship in 1957 by the British School in Rome. Remfry has had two solo exhibitions at the Ferens Art Gallery in 1975 and 2005.

Throughout its history, Hull has been home to numerous trailblazers, mavericks, and free thinkers. William Wilberforce, a Hull-born MP, dedicated his life to ending slavery in the United Kingdom. Our Wilberforce Institute continues his battle today, addressing challenges related to modern-day slavery. Throughout the 1930s, pioneering pilot Amy Johnson established aviation records, becoming a symbol of female strength and a Hull heroine. For 30 years, the poet Philip Larkin served as our University Librarian.

Hull has become one of the UK’s most talked-about locations, with Rough Guides listing it as one of the “top 10 places to visit” in the globe in 2016. A brand-new performance venue, the Ferens Art Gallery, and five outstanding free museums may all be found in the city centre alone. That’s in addition to all the stores you’d expect to find in a big metropolis, as well as theatres and a trampoline park. There’s also The Deep, our well-known submarium. The award-winning new ‘Lagoon of Light’ display, as well as the ever-popular Gentoo penguins, may be found at that attraction.
